VISIT FORMER PIRATE'S ENTRY PORT.

When travelling through the eastern coast of Graciosa island, do not miss pretty abandoned fishing port located near the village of Vitória, called Porto Afonso.

The name most probably comes from the first owner of the land, where the port was built, while the island was being settled. In old times the pirates used to come ashore here and raid the nearby villages, being sheltered from the wind and quite away from the guns of guards, who were securing the coast. It is mentioned that this was the port which pirates used on the 19th of May 1623 when they tried to raid the island, however inhabitants of Graciosa island managed to stop this attempt and expel them. In commemoration of this event, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Vitória was built near this place.

The place is worth visiting not only because of its history but also amazing geological formations. High cliffs uncover different layers of island's construction with different colours and amazing volcanic past. There are numerous of caves formed by Mother Nature, as well as humans, who used them as shelters for their fishing boats. Some of them are still used the same way as before.

On windy days you may encounter falling rocks, so be careful. When the ocean is furious, crashing waves on the nearby lava rocks create an unforgettable atmosphere, worth experiencing! And if the sky is clear, you can spot in the distance contours of São Jorge island, with a high pick of Pico island.
