THE ISLAND OF ALCATRA

The second most inhabited island of the Azores, Terceira is well known for its festivities as well as traditional dish called Alcatra. This was the third island to be discovered ("terceira" means "the third") however at the beginning the island was called "Ilha de Jesus Cristo". In 1499 Vasco da Gama visited Terceira on the back to Lisbon from his first sea voyage to India.

In XVI century the Azores were the only ones to resist the Spanish with Terceira representing the strongest resistance. When King Philip II of Spain ordered the invasion of Terceira, Terceirans gave an origin to one of the most spectacular military strategies in the history - they used cows (!) which were spread through the fields in large quantities and by being scared with the screams and shots, attacked the Spanish who could nothing but run away...
