SANTA MARIA.

THE FIRST DISCOVERED.

GET TO KNOW

THE ONLY ONE WITH GOLDEN BEACHES

Back in 1427 the first Portuguese sailors arrived at the island, discovering it when on the way to Madeira. This happened during the feast day of the Virgin Mary thanks to which the island name was given. Nowadays, with around 5,500 inhabitants, at Santa Maria many tranquil surprises await you.

Hike Pico Alto, the highest point in the island where you can experience a magnificent view over the whole island. Go to São Lourenço to relax at the beach and natural swimming pool, with a glass of local wine and check Farol da Maia - a lighthouse and a perfect view point. It's also worth stopping by Anjos, a seashore village with a small fishing port, where stands a chapel which was visited by Christopher Columbus on his returning trip from America.

SOON YOU WILL FIND HERE LOCAL INSIGHTS AND TIPS TO DISCOVER SANTA MARIA ISLAND.

I haven't been there yet but it is about to change! Stay tuned ;)
